On February 24, Russia received a note from the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry with a notification about the break in diplomatic relations. This was stated at a briefing by the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, the broadcast is available on the agency's YouTube account.
The diplomat stressed that diplomatic relations between Kiev and Moscow were established 30 years ago. “The nationalist regime that came to power as a result of an armed coup in February 2014 put an end to the destruction of our relations,” she said.
Zakharova expressed regret over Kiev's decision. She noted that since 2014, the Ukrainian authorities initiated the termination of dozens of interstate and intergovernmental agreements. “We know that breaking is not building, it is always easy to do, as they think, without thinking about the consequences,” the Foreign Ministry spokeswoman added.
On February 24, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced that he had decided to conduct a special military operation in the Donbass. After that, Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky announced the severance of diplomatic relations with Moscow.
