Tourists in Spain and Italy have been urged to be careful due to the discovery of the first West Nile fever infection in these countries this year. In some cases, it can be fatal.

For its part, the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control issued a warning that the cases in question were local, and not brought to Europe from the tropics.
Sick people experience, in particular, a fever, body pain, rash, and vomiting. In severe cases, symptoms such as convulsions, muscle weakness and paralysis are observed.
Last year, according to the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control, 713 local cases of West Nile virus infection were recorded in Europe, including 67 deaths. The virus was detected in nine countries, while it also spread to 22 new regions where it had not previously been found.
