Initially, an outbred tabby cat named Felix was selected for launch into space, but just before the start he escaped, and then was replaced by a black and white cat Felicette. Despite the fact that she did not get into orbit, she managed to spend several minutes in space.
The cat was launched on October 18, 1963 by the French Training and Research Center for Aviation Medicine. The rocket was launched from the Hammagir cosmodrome and in less than 15 minutes rose to an altitude of 160 kilometers, where the capsule with the cat separated. And then the capsule by parachute landed on the ground, where it was found by the search team.
All this time, the sensors on the cat's head were sending data to the flight control center – electrodes were implanted in its brain. After a successful flight, Felicette was taken back to the French Center for Aviation Medicine, where they studied her for two to three months. And for further research, she was put to sleep.
