The countries of the European Union switched to winter time at 2 am on Sunday 25 October. The clock hands have been moved 1 hour back.
Currently, there are three time zones in the EU: Greenwich time is in effect in Ireland and Portugal, Eastern European time (two hours ahead of it) in eight EU countries, including Finland and the Baltic States, and in the rest of the EU, including Germany, – Central European time ahead of Greenwich time by an hour.
The last change of the clock hands in the EU – March 28, 2021
Since 1996, the European Union has had a unified rule for switching to winter and summer time, the clock hands are moved forward one hour on the last Sunday in March and one hour back on the last Sunday in October. At the same time, individual European countries began the transition to summer time much earlier than the EU as a whole. So in Germany, in order to save electricity, they began to move the clock hands in 1980.
However, the controversy around this topic did not subside. The European Parliament in March 2019 approved the abandonment of the transition to daylight saving time. The last time the clock hands in the European Union will be transferred on March 28, 2021.
Russia no longer switches to daylight saving time
Russia switched to winter time in October 2014. Innovations in the federal law “On the calculation of time” canceled the transition to constant daylight saving time, the decision on which was made in 2011 during the presidential term of Dmitry Medvedev. Now Moscow time is 2 hours ahead of Central European time from the end of October to the end of March, and by only an hour – from the end of March to the end of October.
