If the situation in Ukraine deteriorates, between 20,000 and more than a million refugees may arrive in the EU. This was announced by Vice-President of the European Commission (EC) Margaritis Schinas in a conversation with Die Welt.
He also said that refugees can be used as a means of pressure on the EU, as happened in the spring-autumn of 2021 on the border of Belarus and Poland. Schinas did not specify whether the association will be able to accept all migrants, but stressed that the EC has already created a task force and is preparing for various scenarios.
The EU also prepared to provide assistance to European citizens living in Ukraine.
The Hungarian authorities have already expressed their readiness to accept tens of thousands of refugees from Ukraine in the country, if necessary. At the same time, the UK refused to accept migrants.
