Sergey Lavrov
Representative of the European Foreign Policy Service Peter Stano commented on the words of Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov about Russia's readiness to break with the European Union. He is quoted by RIA Novosti.
“We have taken note of the statements of Mr. Lavrov and the explanations of the Kremlin. Regardless of these statements, the state of relations between the EU and Russia is not good, ”he said.
According to Stano, Brussels wants to build relations with Moscow based on common interests and values, as well as respect for international law and the obligations assumed within the framework of international organizations. At the same time, the association also adheres to the principle of good neighborliness and wants relations that are beneficial to both parties.
Earlier in an interview with journalist Vladimir Solovyov, Lavrov said that Moscow is ready to break off relations with the European Union if Brussels imposes sanctions on sensitive sectors of the Russian economy. The minister stressed that Russia does not want to isolate itself from the rest of the world, but should not rule out such a development of events.
In Germany, the Russian minister's statement was considered “strange and incomprehensible.” The Kremlin, however, pointed out that the meaning of the words of the foreign minister was distorted and Russia would not initiate a break in relations with the European Union.
