European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said that the violation of the rights of the LGBT community is unacceptable in the European Union. Reported by Reuters.
“Zones free of representatives of the LGBT community are zones free of humanity,” said a spokesman for the alliance. It is known that such zones have appeared in Poland since 2019. The head of the European Commission added that a strategy to strengthen the rights of sexual minorities will soon be presented.
Von der Leyen also called for achieving equal recognition of the concept of “family” in all countries of the union. “If you are a parent in one country, you are a parent in every country,” she said. Now the situation is different – in a number of EU countries, same-sex marriage is legalized, in some it is not.
Poland is known for its rejection of non-traditional orientation: it ranks last in tolerance towards LGBT people among all countries of the European Union. The country's population is deeply religious: according to surveys conducted in 2011, more than 86 percent of the country's population is Catholic. Several municipalities and regions of the country declared their rejection of “LGBT ideology” on their territory in order to prohibit the holding of events by representatives of minorities. As of June 2020, about 100 municipalities have passed resolutions that have resulted in them being labeled “LGBT-free zones”.
