All further negotiations on cooperation and security guarantees in Europe should be based on the strengthening of existing agreements between the countries, said the High Representative of the European Union (EU) for Foreign and Security Policy Josep Borrell in a personal Twitter account.
“I discussed with the OSCE Chairman-in-Office (Swedish Foreign Minister) Ann Linde the security situation in Eastern Europe. Any real discussion on security in Europe should be based on the need to strengthen OSCE commitments – the real foundations of European security, and not lead to their destruction, ”Borrell wrote.
On December 22, Borrell supported NATO's proposal to host a meeting of the NATO-Russia Council. He said that inviting the alliance to dialogue in response to the Russian proposals is a serious action to ensure peace in Europe. “The Council will work with both the US and NATO to ensure that its interests are represented in any possible discussion with Russia on European security issues,” the diplomat concluded.
Earlier, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that the first round of talks between Russia and the United States on security guarantees in Europe will start at the very beginning of 2022. The minister noted that there is an agreement between Washington and Moscow to use three tracks of negotiations.
