Foreign Ministers of the countries of the European Union (EU) at an extraordinary meeting plan to adopt further tough sanctions against Russia. Such measures were announced by the EU Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell, his words are reported by RIA Novosti.

He noted that among the restrictions will also be the disconnection of some Russian banks from Swift.

The issue of Russia's possible disconnection from the SWIFT system began to be actively discussed in the West after the start of Moscow's military operation in the Donbass, which was announced on February 24 by President Vladimir Putin. Germany, Italy, Hungary and Cyprus oppose the shutdown – they do not agree with such measures due to fairly close economic ties with Russia.

The Federation Council said that Russia's disconnection from the SWIFT system does not pose a threat to internal settlements and stimulates the spread of the ruble as an international currency.

In turn, the Central Bank of Russia said that the Russian analogue of SWIFT will ensure the transmission of financial messages in any scenario.
