The European Parliament (EP) adopted a resolution in which it demanded to suspend the launch of the Belarusian nuclear power plant for safety reasons. The results of the voting for the document held at the plenary session in Brussels are reported on the EP website.
The European Union believes that the operation of the nuclear power plant in Ostrovets may threaten the security of the surrounding territories. 642 deputies voted for the adoption of the document, 29 voted against, 21 more members of the EP abstained.
On January 13, the first power unit of the BelNPP was brought up to 100 percent of its capacity, specialists began preparations for testing at the facility. It was noted that before putting the facility into commercial operation, engineers will conduct a complex of static and dynamic studies on it to make sure that the equipment is working properly. They will be fully completed within 15 days.
The BelNPP was built with Russian investments, its launch took place on November 7, 2020. After that, President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko called the republic a “nuclear power”. Later, the operation of the power unit was suspended for part of the tests; on December 11, it was restarted.
The authorities of neighboring Lithuania perceived the construction of the station as a threat to their safety and the environment. They intend to completely block the flow of energy from the facility to their territory.
