The European Parliament adopted a resolution on the creation of a special tribunal for Putin and Lukashenko

B Thursday, January 19, the European Parliament approved a resolution establishing a special tribunal for the top leadership of Russia, in particular, the head of the Kremlin, Vladimir Putin, as well as the self-proclaimed President of Belarus, Alexander Lukashenko, for crimes of aggression against Ukraine.

According to the adopted document, the MEPs call on the EU, in close cooperation with Ukraine and the international community, to seek the creation of a special international tribunal to prosecute the political and military leadership of Russia and its allies.

“The atrocities committed by Russian troops in Bucha, Irpin and many other Ukrainian cities, reveal the brutality of the war and emphasize the importance of coordinated international action to bring those responsible for responsibility under international law.Preparatory EU work on a special tribunal should start immediately and focus on creating mechanisms for the court in cooperation with Ukraine. It is necessary to support the Ukrainian and international authorities in providing evidence that will be used in the future,” the MEPs stressed.

The exact terms and composition of the special tribunal have yet to be determined. The text of the ruling was adopted by 472 votes in favor, 19 against and 33 abstentions.

Parliament is convinced that the creation of a special tribunal will send a very clear signal to both Russian society and the international community that Putin and the Russian leadership as a whole can be convicted of the crime of aggression in Ukraine.

On The adopted decision of the European Parliament was reacted to by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine. The head of the diplomatic department, Dmitry Kuleba, called it “an important step towards holding the Russian leadership accountable and preventing such crimes in the future.”

Recall, the city authorities of The Hague support the holding special tribunal over the head of the Kremlin Vladimir Putin in the city.
