European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced that on Tuesday, March 8, proposals will be made to get the EU off Russia's fuel dependence as quickly as possible.
“Tomorrow the European Commission will make proposals on how to quickly get rid of our dependence on Russian fossil fuels. This means diversifying suppliers, switching to LNG and pipeline gas, replenishing the EU's strength by investing in renewable energy sources, as well as improving energy efficiency, von der Leyen said in a statement posted on Twitter on Monday, March 7.
She added that the EU is also preparing a new package of sanctions against the Russian Federation.
– We must make sure that the effect of the sanctions is as serious as possible. And given the actions of the Kremlin in relation to the civilian population, we are working on further sanctions,” said von der Leyen.
In addition, the European Commission will work to protect domestic consumers.
“First, we must protect the most vulnerable consumers and businesses. And prepare more structurally for a massive increase in renewables in our electricity market,” said the EC President.
