The countries of the European Union (EU) are considering the possibility of excluding the energy sector from a possible package of sanctions against Russia, which could be introduced in the event of an escalation of the situation around Ukraine. Bloomberg writes about it.

The discussions were initiated by Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi. According to the agency, Germany and Italy are seeking to protect their banking sectors in the event of new sanctions against Russia. In particular, in Rome it was proposed to focus sanctions on individuals, and not on broad sections of the Russian economy.

In recent months, US authorities have announced a wide range of sanctions against Moscow. In particular, the Minister for European Affairs and the Constitution in the office of the Federal Chancellor of Austria, Karoline Edtstadler, said that the European Union would not allow the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline to be put into operation, subject to Russia's “military aggression” against Ukraine.
