The funds will be used to purchase priority military equipment for Ukraine.
The European Union will transfer the first tranche of 1.4 billion to Ukraine . euros from income from frozen assets of the Russian Federation for the purchase of weapons for Ukraine in early August 2024.
This was announced by EU High Representative Josep Borrell on July 22 at a press conference following a meeting of EU foreign ministers.
“On income, I informed the ministers about the progress in preparing the first tranche of 1.4 million euros, which is expected to take place at the beginning of August, next week,” Borrell said.
According to him, the funds will be used to purchase air defense systems for Ukraine, artillery shells and weapons for Ukrainian industry.
“Therefore, we will not only provide military support to Ukraine, but also from Ukraine itself. Which, of course, is the most logical and effective path we can take,” Borrell noted.
Earlier, the head of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, Rustem Umerov, met with Josep Borrell in Washington and expressed gratitude to the decision to use income from the frozen assets of the Russian Federation.
