Georgia will receive the status of a candidate for EU accession after a number of conditions are met, unlike Ukraine and Moldova.
The head of the European Council, Charles Michel, announced this on his Twitter in Georgian.
“The Council of the European Union has decided to recognize the European perspective of Georgia and is ready to grant candidate status as soon as the established priorities are met. I congratulate the Georgian people,” he said.
Michel called this decision “a historic moment in EU- Georgia” and assured that the future of Georgia lies with the EU.
In turn, Georgian President Salome Zurabishvili assured that her country would fulfill all the necessary conditions.
“This is a historic day. Georgia's European perspective has been recognized. We are now ready to work decisively in the coming months to achieve candidate status,” she tweeted.

Zurabishvili also congratulated her Ukrainian and Moldovan colleagues Vladimir Zelensky and Maia Sandu and all Ukrainians and Moldovans on the positive decision of the European Council.
Recall that Ukraine officially received the status of a candidate for EU membership. The corresponding decision was made by the European Council on June 23 at the summit of EU leaders in Brussels.
Earlier, the Prime Minister of Georgia said that his country deserves the status of an EU candidate more than Ukraine. He also accused the Ukrainian people's deputy David Arakhamia that he allegedly prevented Tbilisi from obtaining the status of a candidate for EU membership.
