French Defense Minister Sebastian Lecornu said France was proposing to create an EU rapid reaction force that would carry out tasks in which NATO is incompetent.

Lekarnu repeated the proposal previously voiced by French President Emmanuel Macron. A 5,000-man unit could be formed as early as next year.
According to the French plan, the main task of the rapid reaction force will be to evacuate EU citizens from other countries where military conflicts have broken out.
The head of the French defense department noted that there are many crises in which the North Atlantic Alliance is incompetent, and France often carries out rescue operations on its own.
“We must be able to create this force very quickly to ensure the safety of the citizens of Europe, Portugal, Italy, Germany and France,” Lekoronu explained.
The Minister also clarified that there are secret military missions that NATO should not know about for certain reasons. He mentioned the evacuation of Europeans from Sudan in 2023 and emphasized that France resolved this issue almost independently.
Recall that most Western countries have long abandoned compulsory military service, which could become a problem in the event of a large-scale war in Europe. But in some countries, the majority of young people are still ready to defend their homeland with arms in hand.
