The EU is preparing new border crossing rules: what will change in the fall

The European Union is preparing to launch an entry-exit system that will change the rules for crossing borders.

EU prepares new border crossing rules

The European Parliament has approved the launch of a new entry-exit system (EES), which will gradually be implemented at the external borders of the European Union from autumn. The goal is to improve security, speed up border controls and reduce queues. The new rules will apply to all third-country nationals crossing the EU borders.

The European Parliament reported this.

Once fully implemented, EES will no longer place physical stamps in passports. The system will automatically register:

This data will concern third-country nationals using short-term visas or visa-free travel. All Schengen countries will have access to this information in real time.

How the new system will work

The EES launch will be phased over 180 days to avoid system overload. Each phase will have targets:

If the system fails due to technical problems or long queues, its launch may be temporarily suspended. However, Member States have the right to implement the EES immediately and in full, without a phased launch.

After formal approval by the EU Council, the law will be published in the Official Journal.

“We have ensured that the system is up and running as quickly as possible. It will improve security and speed up border crossings for those with the correct documents,” said European Parliament rapporteur Asita Kanko.

The new system will allow for more accurate recording of overstays in the EU, standardise border control data and allow for faster identification of potential security threats. This is the first time that biometrics are being systematically collected at the EU's external borders.

Let us recall that we previously wrote that Poland’s main opposition party PiS is proposing to tighten the rules for obtaining citizenship for migrants who want to become Poles.
