If TikTok is proven to have violated the law, the social network will likely be fined up to 6% of its annual profits.
The European Commission has opened formal proceedings against the Chinese social network TikTok under the Digital Services Act to check whether the platform is doing enough to protect children
This is reported by Reuters with reference to a document dated February 19.
“Today we are opening an investigation into TikTok for suspected violations of transparency and obligations to protect minors: addictive design, screen time limits, age verification, default privacy settings,” said European Commissioner Thierry Breton.
Under the EU Digital Services Act (DSA), which applies to all online platforms from February 17, major online platforms and search engines must introduce measures to combat illegal online content and risks to public safety .
“The protection of minors is an enforcement priority for the DSA. As a platform that reaches millions of children and adolescents, TikTok must fully comply with the requirements of the DSA and must play a special role in the protection of minors online,” Breton said. < /p>
The European Commission said the investigation will focus on the design of TikTok's system, including algorithmic systems that can stimulate behavioral addictions and create so-called “rabbit hole effects.”
It will also be reviewed whether TikTok has put in place appropriate measures to ensure a high level of privacy and security for minors. In addition to protecting minors, the Commission is considering whether TikTok provides a reliable database of advertising on its platform.
The source says this is the second EU investigation under the Digital Services Act after Elon Musk's social network X, which remains under investigation.
Recall that TSN.ua has already reported how to take care of the emotional protection of schoolchildren. In particular, teacher, psychologist and director of the distance school “Atmospheric School” Tatyana Serebryanskaya spoke about accounts on Facebook, Instagram or TikTok and the impact of content on the child’s psyche.< /p>
