It will be significantly more difficult for Hungary to receive assistance from the EU, journalists note. In addition, they can use an article that will deprive her of the right to vote.
Methods of restraining the Hungarian President are being discussed in the European Union Viktor Orban from blocking support for Ukraine. In particular, EU leaders are considering the option of depriving Hungary of voting rights in order to approve without participation an agreement to provide a 50 billion euro aid package to Ukraine in 2024-2027.
This was reported by Channel 24, citing the Financial Times.
Some officials in Brussels are proposing penalties under Article 7 of the 2007 European Union treaty for violations of the rule of law – this could lead to the termination of the state's voting rights.
“The move could be blocked by any other member state, but a change of government in Poland means that Hungary no longer has guaranteed support in the EU. However, many countries are concerned about the use of such punishment because, in essence, it is the most a powerful weapon of the EU against a member state,” write the publication’s journalists.
European politicians tried to understand what was behind Orban's actions. Does he want to get 20 billion euros blocked due to problems with democracy in Hungary? Does it work in favor of Russian President Vladimir Putin, who is trying to harm the EU?
Journalists of the publication indicated that this is precisely what can explain the concession to the EU: the allocation of 10 billion euros on the eve of the vote on the issue of Ukraine. The Hungarian Prime Minister, seeing the money, did not vote against it. However, he later stated that he had 75 different options for resistance to Ukraine and blocked the allocation of 55 billion euros.
“It's possible that Hungary could create more problems and force us to use several different countermeasures. However, in the end, Hungary will not be able to stop us from providing money to Ukraine,” said a senior official at last week's summit EU.
The British newspaper The Times published an article saying that Ukraine is unlikely to join the European Union until 2030. According to journalists, the main obstacle to joining the EU is war and poverty in the country.
The publication writes that if Ukraine joins the EU, this will cause significant changes in the union, which will become the most radical in recent decades.
“How the EU will 'swallow' Ukraine, a country that, before Russia's invasion, was already the poorest in Europe?” – says The Times.
Viktor Orban said that he saw no reason to start negotiations on Ukraine’s accession to the EU. On December 15, it became known that Viktor Orban vetoed the allocation of 50 billion euros for Ukraine from the European Union.
