The EU does not plan to introduce quotas for military refugees from Ukraine

European Commissioner for Home Affairs Ylva Johansson said that the European Union should be solidary in accepting Ukrainian refugees, but no quotas will be set.

She said this in an interview with ERR.

– We have created a solidarity platform. The European Commission meets with member governments twice a week and discusses the situation. In this way, member countries can communicate how many people they will be able to host. Other member states are reporting what they need,โ€ she said, answering a question about the possible use of the EU refugee allocation mechanism.

According to her, this is a new approach to the situation without the use of mandatory quotas.

Johansson urged to develop it and expressed hope that it would be possible to work with it further.

She specified that there is an unprecedented situation regarding Ukrainian refugees on the part of EU member states and citizens.

– We haven't had a crisis like this since World War II. So of course it's a challenge. But the best way to deal with such challenges is through collaboration. But we should also cooperate with third countries that are ready to become part of the solution and accept Ukrainian refugees โ€“ Canada, the United States and the United Kingdom,โ€ the European Commissioner said.

She added that, given the number of internally displaced persons in Ukraine, the EU must be ready to receive millions more people.
