The foreign ministers of the EU countries did not offer specific options for new anti-Russian sanctions over the case of Alexei Navalny. This was announced at a press conference in Brussels by the head of European diplomacy, Josep Borrell, RIA Novosti reports.

According to him, some of the meeting participants asked how the bloc of countries should react to the Russian events, but no specific proposals were put forward. At the same time, the Council of Foreign Ministers of the EU “is ready to respond when there are appropriate circumstances, to take appropriate measures if necessary.”

Borrell noted that the question of possible measures of the European Union against Russia has not yet been closed and work in this direction continues.

Earlier, French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian proposed to introduce anti-Russian sanctions in connection with the case of Alexei Navalny. “As for the sanctions, it is necessary to make them really effective. And discussions on this topic will take place tomorrow at the European Council, ”he said, implying a meeting of the foreign ministers of the EU countries, at which the participants will also discuss the arrest of a Russian.

In the afternoon of January 23, uncoordinated actions were held in Moscow, St. Petersburg and other cities of Russia in support of Alexei Navalny, who was arrested on January 18 for repeated violations of the conditions for observing the probationary period in the Yves Rocher case. The meeting of the EU Foreign Ministers was announced a day earlier.
