Sassoli stressed that European countries are very concerned about what is happening in the country. According to him, the regime of Alexander Lukashenko violates human rights and freedoms. The direct perpetrators of this should be punished, he said.
The head of the European Parliament said that the EU should impose sanctions against those who have abused their power in Belarus. At the same time, he stressed that external interference in the Belarusian crisis is unacceptable, since the country's citizens must vote on the country's future.
The countries of Europe and NATO have been actively responding to all events in Belarus in recent days. Thus, the foreign ministers of eight European countries called on the Belarusian authorities to immediately enter into a dialogue with the opposition. Europe also believes that the procedure for the Belarusian elections did not meet international standards of democracy and the rule of law. The EU has already begun work on sanctions against the Belarusian authorities.
On the evening of August 9, protests broke out across Belarus over the discontent of residents with the results of the presidential elections. Clashes with riot police began in the center of Minsk. The rallies were suppressed with the use of tear gas, stun grenades, smoke bombs. It is known about hundreds of victims and thousands of those detained.
