MEP from Romania Carmen Avram raised the question of possible measures against Facebook in connection with the data leakage of 533 million users of the social network. The parliamentarian stated her position in an appeal to the European Commission, which RT got acquainted with.
“The publication contains phone numbers, names, physical and email addresses, and biographical information. Security experts say that hackers can use this data to impersonate other people for fraudulent purposes, ”she said.
As Avram clarified, among the citizens, whose data was in the public domain on one of the forums on the network, there are 21 of her colleagues in the European Parliament. According to the MEP, the published data “most likely” were relevant several years ago. Nevertheless, as she noted, what happened once again demonstrates how much information Facebook and other social networks collect, as well as the vulnerability of such information.
Against this background, Avram asked the European Commission what measures they took with regard to the social network “in connection with the recent large-scale data leak.”
“Could the European Commission block Facebook's access to the data of 430 million citizens of the European Single Market, given that the media giant appears to have repeatedly violated the General Data Protection Regulation and the EU's Electronic Privacy Regulation?” – also asked the parliamentarian.
In early April, it became known about the leak of personal data of 533 million Facebook users from 106 countries.
Subsequently, representatives of the Association of Professional Users of Social Networks and Messengers applied to Roskomnadzor with a request to conduct an investigation into the incident. As it was specified, among the affected users of the social network were 10 million Russians.
