In the first quarter of 2022, inflation will remain at a high level, said Nikolay Pereslavsky, an employee of the Department of Economic and Financial Research of the CMS Institute, Prime agency writes.
According to the expert, this is due to the low base effect. From January to May 2021, the rise in prices, according to Rosstat, almost reached six percent. According to the economist, a wave of price increases can be expected in February, when goods will be brought to the country under contracts with new price tags. Pereslavsky urged not to forget about the indexation of tariffs, excise taxes on tobacco and alcohol, labeling, increase in prices for construction and repair work.
The economist admitted a high probability of a mixed scenario: the growth in the cost of goods for the year will be about eight percent. There are no objective reasons for inflation to remain within the four percent forecasted by the Central Bank, he added.
If the pandemic recedes, by the end of 2022 it will be fixed at the level of six percent, the specialist said. “If new sanctions are introduced, the pandemic will receive a new round of development after the omicron, and the tension between the European Union and Russia will reach the point of no return, then we can see both 10 and 12 percent,” the specialist emphasized.
Earlier, the chairman of the Bank of Russia Elvira Nabiullina noted that inflation in Russia at the end of 2021 will be slightly more than eight percent.
