Germany drew attention to the experience of combating the coronavirus of the former US President Donald Trump and was the first among the EU countries to purchase a drug that was used to treat the Republican. The Minister of Health of the country Jens Spahn told about this in an interview with the newspaper Bild am Sonntag.
The head of the department clarified that Berlin purchased 200 thousand doses of the drug based on monoclonal antibodies, the purchase cost the government 400 million euros. Spahn added that university hospitals will be the first to receive the drug. According to him, the introduction of antibodies to patients at risk at an early stage will eliminate the severe course of the disease.
The minister did not disclose the manufacturer of the drug, but Bild am Sonntag reporters assured that it was a drug that was used to treat Trump. At the same time, it is noted that the doctors who worked with the former president during the treatment, among other things, used the development of the Regeneron company, which is essentially a “cocktail” of monoclonal antibodies.
Earlier it was reported that in the United States, doctors accidentally injected residents of West Virginia with a “cocktail” with antibodies to the Regeneron coronavirus instead of a vaccine. In the aftermath of the incident, officials at the local health department assured patients that their lives were safe.
In November 2020, the United States was allowed to treat some patients with coronavirus with a “cocktail” of REGN-COV2 antibodies of the American biotechnology company Regeneron Pharmaceuticals, which was taken by former President Donald Trump during his illness. This remedy is used only in emergency cases for the treatment of adults and children with mild to moderate illness. Patients who require oxygen therapy or hospitalization will not take this cocktail.
