After the end of the New Year holidays, an increase in the incidence of COVID-19 is expected, said general practitioner Konstantin Khomanov. TASS reports.
The expert said that at the moment in Russia there is a displacement of the delta strain, but despite this, the number of patients with a severe course of the disease has hardly changed. “Probably, the decline in morbidity, taking place now, will continue in our country until the end of the New Year holidays. In the future, due to the numerous social contacts, the low percentage of vaccinated three times and the negative attitude of the population to wearing masks and distancing, the incidence of COVID-19 is likely to rise, “Khomanov said.
According to the doctor, during the holidays, the risk of contracting coronavirus increases significantly due to the growth of social contacts. “Traditional purchases of food and gift items with the creation of crowds at the checkout, close communication at a party and at home with unvaccinated or obviously sick people, wearing masks incorrectly or ignoring it, a low percentage of vaccinated people, a large number of people with fake vaccination certificates – increase the risk of contracting coronavirus “, – added the therapist.
On December 23 last year, virologist, academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences Felix Ershov called the omicron strain a possible signal for the end of the pandemic. He noted that this variant of the coronavirus is extremely contagious, but “not deadly,” and the antibodies obtained with its help “will help both vaccines and the immunity of those who have been ill.”
