The head of the Munich Security Conference, Wolfgang Ischinger, said that the United States should “directly or indirectly” participate in the work of the Normandy format (Russia, Ukraine, Germany and France) to resolve the situation in Donbass, RIA Novosti reports with reference to the Funke media group.
The diplomat called for maintaining the “Normandy format” while Russia is working in it. However, he noted that the country is ready for serious negotiations with the United States on security issues in Europe. Therefore, he invited the States to participate in the “Normandy format”.
In addition, Ishinger commented on the supply of defensive weapons to Ukraine. He stated the importance of economic deterrence coupled with military. “The supply of defensive weapons can make an important contribution to the deterrence effect and, thus, to the prevention of war,” he stressed.
The head of the Munich Conference called on Germany not to limit military support to Ukraine with the supply of five thousand helmets, as this calls into question its solidarity.
Earlier it was reported that Germany will send Ukraine five thousand helmets as humanitarian aid due to the deterioration of the situation in the Donbass. It is noted that the country’s authorities still do not support the supply of lethal weapons to the republic.
