Deputy Foreign Minister of the Russian Federation Sergei Vershinin explained to the Permanent Representative of Ukraine to the UN Sergei Kislitsa the difference between the status of Russia and Ukraine in this organization. It is reported by RIA Novosti.

On February 17, at a meeting of the UN Security Council, Kislitsa again tried to raise the issue of the eligibility of Russia's presence in the UN. After that, Vershinin noted that the purpose of such demarches is Kiev's attempt to assert itself through speculation aimed at a public that does not understand international law. The diplomat explained that “Russia is not a successor state of the USSR, but a successor state that automatically continues the implementation of international obligations by the same state subject to international law, but with a different name.”

“And Ukraine has just become a successor state, that is, it is a new state entity. Probably, it is possible to raise the question of whether Ukraine itself went through this? Or, in your person, we are still dealing with the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic, ”the deputy minister said.

Earlier, Kislytsya doubted that Russia was able to document its rights to permanent membership in the Security Council. According to him, after the liquidation of the USSR, Russia, as a successor, entered the UN without going through the procedure for joining the world organization.
