The demand for smartwatches has grown by one and a half times

The demand for smart devices continues to grow. The specialists of Strategy Analytics found that the global market for smart wristwatches in the second quarter of 2021 increased by one and a half times (by 47%) compared to the same period in 2020. In just three months, 18.1 million smartwatches were sold worldwide. The most popular were gadgets from Apple, Samsung and the Swiss company Garmin.

Ranking leader Apple sold 9.5 million Apple Watches in the second quarter, accounting for 52.5% of the total smartwatch market, Strategy Analytics said.

Samsung sold 2 million smartwatches with a 10.6% market share, while Garmin sold 1.5 million devices with an 8.3% market share.

Stephen Walzer, senior analyst at Strategy Analytics, noted that the growth in smartwatch sales was the fastest since 2018. He said the growth was driven by the popularity of fitness devices to help keep track of health.

The Russian market is also experiencing a boom in smartwatch sales. The Svyaznoy retailer has calculated that Russians spent 19 billion rubles on them in the first half of 2021.

“According to the results of the first half of the year, we observe a tendency towards a shift in demand in the category of smart watches. If in 2020 fitness trackers were bought more readily due to their low cost and rather good functionality, then thanks to the expansion of the smartwatch range, buyers prefer to pay 2,000-3,000 rubles and instead of a fitness tracker buy smartwatches. After all, the latter allow not only tracking health indicators, but also answering calls or SMS and making contactless payments, ”explained Mikhail Dogadin, Vice President for Procurement and Development of the company.

In August, experts found that demand for TVs, smartphones and speakers in Russia had dropped. Experts explained this by the fact that demand cannot grow indefinitely.
