The debris of the collapsed bridge over the Elbe received a “second life”: what they came up with in Dresden

A souvenir shop in Dresden sells pieces of the Carola Bridge.

An enterprising owner of one of the souvenir shops in Dresden came up with a way to use the pieces of the Carola Bridge across the Elbe River, which collapsed on the night of September 11. It is not only the souvenir shop that will benefit from Hendrik Dietrich's idea.

BILD writes about this.

Hendrik Dietrich, who owns a souvenir shop in Dresden, decided to take advantage of the situation and began selling pieces of the collapsed bridge. Small stones cost about 10 euros, large ones – 20. Each piece of the historic bridge has a plaque with an image of the bridge after the collapse and the date of the incident.

“We offer the opportunity to purchase a tangible and tangible piece of memory. A small piece of the Carola Bridge with a certificate of authenticity from the company that carried out the demolition,” the shop owner explained.

To implement his idea, Dietrich established contacts with a company that clears away the rubble after the bridge collapse, and then organized the collection of suitable fragments and their preparation for sale.

According to the entrepreneur, on the very first day he sold all 200 prepared stones, and the next day there was a line of people wanting to buy a historical souvenir near his store, but they are no longer available for sale.

Hendrik Dietrich is now accepting orders from those who did not manage to buy a piece of the bridge for sale, and promises to fulfill them within two weeks. Customers are warned that they will have to wait, as it takes time to collect and prepare the stones.

The shop owner notes that not only his shop and the company that is clearing the rubble will benefit from the venture. Dietrich will donate one euro from each purchase of a Carola Bridge fragment to the repair of the Dresden TV tower.

Recall that the bridge in Dresden collapsed due to overly careful maintenance during the GDR era. By a lucky coincidence, the Carola Bridge collapsed at night, a few minutes after the last tram passed over it.
