A special session of the UN General Assembly to discuss a draft resolution on the situation in Ukraine is to be held on Monday, February 28. It is reported by TASS with reference to a source in the international organization.

Prior to this, the United States sent a request to the UN to convene the Security Council on Sunday. It is noted that within the framework of it, a procedural vote will be held on the issue of holding the General Assembly on the situation in Ukraine. In order for the session to take place, 9 out of 15 members of the Security Council must vote in favor, while the right of veto does not apply to this situation.

Earlier, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, during a conversation with United Nations Secretary General António Guterres, called for depriving Russia of the right to vote in the UN Security Council. It is noted that Zelensky called aggression from Russia the reason for such a call. The UN Secretary General does not have the authority to deprive members of the “nuclear five” of the right to vote in the Security Council.

On February 24, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced the start of a special military operation to protect Donbass. His press secretary Dmitry Peskov said that its goal is the demilitarization and denazification of Ukraine, and the timing of the special operation will be determined by the supreme commander.
