
The creator of the first Soviet nuclear submarines, Radiy Shmakov, dies
The chief designer of the design bureau “Malakhit” Radiy Shmakov passed away. He was 90 years old. He took part in the creation of the first in the USSR nuclear submarine K-3 “Leninsky Komsomol”, according to the website of the Club of Submariners. “Today, on September 23, at the age of 91, the chief designer of the SPMBM” Malakhit “Shmakov Radiy Anatolyevich – an honorary member our Submariners' Club. Radiy Shmakov is a graduate of the Leningrad Shipbuilding Institute. After he received his diploma, he began working in the Special Design Bureau No. 143 (now called “Malachite”) as a design engineer, in 1958 he was promoted to the head of the sector, in 1962 he was appointed chief designer.
He participated in the development of the first Soviet nuclear-powered submarine, the Leninsky Komsomol. In addition, he was the chief designer of nuclear-powered torpedo submarines of projects 671 (“Ruff”), also participated in projects for the modernization of nuclear submarines of early generations, was a lecturer at the Leningrad Shipbuilding Institute.
It is noteworthy that the submarine K-3 “Leninsky Komsomol” was launched in August 1957 and served until 1991. At first they wanted to dispose of it, but in 2015 it was decided to keep it as a museum piece.
The shipbuilder Radiy Shmakov was awarded the Orders of the October Revolution and twice the Order of the Red Banner of Labor, in 1981 he received the State Prize of the USSR, in 1997 he became the laureate of the Russian Government Prize in Science and Technology.
Note that the Malakhit Marine Engineering Bureau is currently considered the country's leading design bureau, which specializes in the design of marine equipment, including those with a nuclear power plant.
