Russian President Vladimir Putin instructed to create at least 15 scientific and educational centers in the country by 2024, this is one of the tasks of the national project “Science”. REC should unite intellectual and industrial forces to create breakthrough projects on topical regional topics.

At the Krasnoyarsk Economic Forum, the principles of the formation of these new centers were discussed, which will solve regional problems and help bring the economy out of the crisis caused by a prolonged pandemic.

The Krasnoyarsk Territory intends to join the struggle for the creation of the first such center, which will assess the carbon footprint of the products of the largest companies and the possibilities of its compensation.

“The region needs a platform for fundamental research of various ecosystems and the development of mechanisms for translating data on stocks and flows of carbon into the plane of the economy – in the form of financial equivalents or preferences for our enterprises. In our opinion, the first climatic REC in Russia can become such a platform, ”says Maksim Rumyantsev, rector of the Siberian Federal University.

REC activities are planned to be focused on three key areas: scientific substantiation of the potential of forests and soil in carbon sequestration; development and implementation of available technologies to reduce the carbon footprint of industrial and energy enterprises; creation of a network of carbon polygons.

“For Russia, as a major exporter of products to the EU, an important element of carbon policy is becoming an accurate knowledge of the carbon-absorbing capacity of forests, steppes, swamps, and agricultural land. A scientifically substantiated assessment of the ability of natural ecosystems in Russia to bind a significant amount of CO2 emitted by industrial enterprises will allow domestic businesses to reduce the carbon footprint of their products due to market conditions, ”says Evgeny Vaganov, Academician of the Siberian Federal University, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

Only in the Krasnoyarsk Territory, the area of forests is 106.7 million hectares, they annually absorb 53.9 million tons of CO2-equivalent. This makes it possible to “compensate” with a margin the emission of greenhouse gases of the region's enterprises.
