The head of the Chinese company SinoVac, which developed the CoronaVac vaccine, Yi Weidong, admitted that it was impossible to create a 100 percent effective drug. RIA Novosti reports.
According to him, the inactivated vaccine against COVID-19 (consists of particles of pathogens grown in a special culture and then killed by heat treatment or cellular poison) turned out to be the most effective of all the studied species. However, no drug can guarantee complete protection against infection.
“Ideally, after the vaccine, there should be 100% immunity, 100% absence of infections, serious illness and deaths. This is the ideal that we strive for, but this cannot be, ”he explained, answering the question of whether a person develops absolute immunity to COVID-19 or decreases the risk of infection after vaccination.
Weidong added that all the drugs used for mass vaccinations are not 100 percent effective. However, according to the standards of the World Health Organization (WHO), it is considered suitable for use if the protection factor is at least 50 percent. He expressed confidence that after the completion of the tests, this figure will be much higher.
SinoVac began developing a vaccine in January, immediately confirming the Wuhan coronavirus outbreak. CoronaVac vaccination provides two injections with an interval of 2-4 weeks, intended for persons over 18 years of age.
