The aggression of Russian President Vladimir Putin against Ukraine has consequences far beyond Europe.

This is the opinion of European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.

Speaking at the European Humanitarian Forum, von der Leyen called on Russia for peace . According to her, the Kremlin's war in Ukraine threatens food security around the world.

“Ukraine is the breadbasket of the world. Only Ukraine provides more than half of the wheat supplyWorld Food Program. Countries like Somalia rely entirely on Ukraine and Russia for wheat imports. This war adds to an already dire situation. Because our world is still ravaged by too many conflicts, from Syria to Yemen, from the Sahel to Ethiopia, from Afghanistan to Myanmar,” von der Leyen said.

The head of the European Commission said that the EU will contribute 2.5 billion euros to tackle the world's food shortages.

“The EU, the world's largest humanitarian donor, continues to ramp up its support from 2.5 billion euros until 2024 to help regions most affected by food insecurity,” she said and promised that the EU will prepare a series of special measures to increase food production in Europe.

Von der Leyen warned the world community about the threat of entering a new era of famine in many parts of the world.

It was previously reported that Russia's attack on Ukraine led to a sharp increase in wheat prices in the world, which strengthens the already high food prices.
