On July 2, the mayor of the city, Karin Velge, approved the temporary renaming ahead of the star's three Eras Tour shows, which will take place on July 17, 18 and 19.
This idea was proposed by fan Aleshani Westhoff, who prepared a corresponding petition.
“It's a great idea to temporarily rename Gelsenkirchen to Swiftkirchen,” Welge replied.
Markus Schwardtmann, head of public relations for Gelsenkirchen, also confirmed that the city “will install many more signs in crowded areas of the city in the coming days.”
“As the mayor, I am, of course, very happy that Taylor Swift, currently the most successful singer in the world, will perform in Gelsenkirchen three times, so that our city will once again be in the international spotlight,” Velge shared.

Along with the name change, the city will see other Swift-inspired changes, including a “Taylor Swift tram” from Bogestra — the city's local public transport — and a stone to be added to the city's Walk of Fame. There will also be a “big Taylor Swift party outdoors” closer to the show date.
