An Intel spokesman inadvertently revealed details about Thunderbolt 5, the next generation of hardware interfaces for connecting various peripherals to a computer. This version of Thunderbolt has yet to be announced.
The leak revealed that Thunderbolt 5 will feature bandwidth up to 80 Gbps. This is twice the amount of existing Thunderbolt 4 and USB 4. It is also clear that Intel intends to use additional bandwidth through the same USB-C connector.
In addition, the interface supports the new PAM-3 modulation technology. This will allow Thunderbolt 5 to achieve higher throughput than the more standard NRZ.
Recall that Intel introduced Thunderbolt 4 last year, but the latest Apple Mac and iPad Pro models still only support Thunderbolt 3.
