Arms supplies to Ukraine may lead to the termination of dialogue with Russia, said Bundestag deputy and foreign policy expert of the German Christian Democratic Union (CDU) party Norbert Retgen in an interview with DPA.
“The price for Germany’s arms supplies may be the loss of opportunities for dialogue with Moscow, which others do not have. Someone wants it, but no one will benefit from it,” Retgen said. He believes that the volume of Berlin’s economic and financial assistance to Kiev is already enough to effectively support the Ukrainian state.
The expert called on German Chancellor Olaf Scholz to clearly indicate Berlin’s commitment to the principles of NATO and the prioritization of European security in future negotiations with American President Joe Biden. He recalled that against the background of the start of arms supplies from other countries of the alliance, the refusal of Germany caused accusations of Germany’s lack of solidarity with other members of the defense bloc.
On January 19, a representative of the German Defense Ministry repeatedly refused to supply lethal weapons to Ukraine after statements by the Ukrainian ambassador to Germany Andrei Melnik addressed to Berlin.
On January 26, the German authorities decided to send five thousand helmets to the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) as humanitarian aid due to the aggravation of the situation in Donbass.
