The Big Bang: 70 years ago, the second atomic bomb of the USSR was tested
70 years ago, a second nuclear bomb was tested in the USSR. Soviet scientists managed to improve the nuclear charge, the correspondent of the “MIR 24” Vitaly Popov.
The heart of the Semipalatinsk nuclear test site is the Experimental Field. It was here in the middle of the last century that the aboveground tests of the most terrible weapon on the planet were carried out.
It was twice as light, but almost twice as powerful as the first bomb – 38 kilotons against 22. Slightly more than three meters and three tons of unstoppable explosive power. The test of the second nuclear bomb of the Soviet Union was scheduled for September 24.
The development and testing of nuclear bombs was a top secret project. The devices were even named so to be misleading. The bombs were designated as RDS – “special jet engine”. There were other variants of decoding: “Stalin's jet engine” or “Russia makes itself.”

“There was no particular information. A total of 456 nuclear tests were carried out. Of these, 116 were carried out in the atmosphere and 340 underground tests in adits and wells, ”said the head of the information group of the training and information center Aisulu Omarkhanova.
Responsible for the development of the first bombs were the scientific leader Academician Kurchatov (later the city on the territory of the test site was named after him) and the chief designer Julius Khariton.
For 40 years of operation of the test site, nuclear tests have caused irreparable harm to the ecology of the region and the health of the population. In Kazakhstan, almost 1.5 million people are recognized as their victims.
Scientists say more than 80% of the landfill is now safe to visit. Radiation risks persisted mainly in the areas where underground tests were carried out. They are closed today.
