The Belarusian authorities have named the number of extremist criminal cases initiated since the summer of 2020. This was announced on Thursday, February 25, according to Sputnik Belarus.

“The Investigative Committee is investigating more than 2.3 thousand criminal cases of an extremist nature. The main conclusion that we have made is that the entire law enforcement bloc, including the UK, is committed to preserving the independence and sovereignty of the state, legality and law and order in the country, ”said the head of the department Ivan Noskevich.

Earlier, Noskevich said that the Investigative Committee refused to open a criminal case into the death of Alexander Taraikovsky, the first protester to die after the start of the mass rallies.

Presidential elections were held in Belarus on August 9, 2020. The CEC announced that Alexander Lukashenko, who ran for a sixth term, won 80 percent of the vote. This sparked massive protests across the country that have lasted for six months.
