Tiger Tiger Club has been fined £120,000 after four people were taken to hospital after consuming caustic soda, commonly used to treat waste water and remove grease from ovens.
December 7, 2021, a group of people visited a London nightclub and ordered four tequilas. The bartender realized he didn't have any shot salt on hand and went into the unlit area behind the bar, where he used a plastic cup to scoop up what he thought was salt from a container on the shelf.
According to Westminster City Council, four people then licked the salt and drank shots of tequila, after which they immediately felt sick and the bartender tasted what he thought was salt. The substance burned his mouth and tongue, and he realized that it was not salt.
Four people were given water and then taken to hospital, and during a police investigation, a container labeled caustic soda was discovered.
Police were called to the nightclub around 10:50 p.m. after reports of people being burned by a substance. They previously explained that all four people taken to the hospital were women, and the man refused hospitalization.
As a result, the nightclub was closed, and the incident was not considered suspicious.
Investigators tested the substance that four people had ingested and found that it had a pH level of 13 on the scale, meaning it was very alkaline and certainly not intended for human consumption.
Tiger Tiger pleaded guilty to all four charges, resulting in a fine of £120,000 by the judge.
