The problem of an acute shortage of semiconductors for global automakers promised to partially solve in the coming weeks. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), one of the world's largest chip suppliers, increased its chip production by 30% in January-March, and will increase by 60% by the end of the year. In addition, the firm decided to invest in new component factories, including those outside Taiwan.
According to TSMC CEO Chun-Ching Wei, taking into account all the measures taken, the shortage of chips for his company's customers will “significantly decrease” in July. In addition, United Microelectronics Corporation, a Taiwanese competitor to TSMC, previously announced a significant expansion of its 28-nanometer chip manufacturing capacity. The manufacturer will spend $ 3.6 billion on this.
Analysts at HS Markit predict that the chip shortage will decrease in July-September. “The situation is becoming clearer and more efforts are being made to improve the transparency of the very complex supply chain,” the company said.
The auto industry is one of the most affected industries due to the shortage of components. Industry representatives and analysts had previously predicted a way out of the current crisis no earlier than 2022–2023. In the meantime, consumers have to overpay for cars in the context of a narrowing range and the consequences of the fall of the ruble.
The deficit began to be felt at the end of 2020, during the shutdown of specialized factories during periods of isolation due to the coronavirus. The global shortage of automotive components hit the AvtoVAZ business as well. In early June, the company stopped car production for two days due to a disruption in the supply of imported parts. In the middle of the month, the Volkswagen assembly plant in Nizhny Novgorod was closed.
