The author of the book about the Grinch was accused of racism and humiliation of vegans
The books of the famous children's writer Theodore Seuss Geisel, who everyone knows as Dr. Seuss, who wrote, for example, “The Grinch Stole Christmas”, is now forbidden to read in the United States. They are declared racist and offensive to society. Gleb Sterkhov, the correspondent of MIR 24, learned how the children's books, on which several generations have grown up, have so offended the Americans.
“Offensive and stereotypical characters. Humiliation of African Americans and Asians, especially Japanese. Insulting vegans and portraying people in the wrong and hurtful way ”- this cut of quotes seems to be from a conviction. But this is not a prosecutor's speech, but a decision of the publishing house, which has all the rights to the legacy of the world famous children's writer Dr. Seuss. He has been the best-selling author in the English language for over half a century. But not now.
“It hurts people! Disadvantaged. He directs everyone to whom to obey. Who is a foreigner here, who is undesirable. And this is presented to children, adolescents during their formation! ” – the activist of the anti-racist movement Teresa Vu-Pav expressed outrage.
Six of the author's books have already been banned for publication and withdrawn from stores, schools and libraries. Among them are the famous “If I ran a zoo” and “Fried eggs super” for the little ones. Operation Antibook was timed to coincide with the 117th birthday of the classic of children's literature. “Not only did they do it, but they did it on his birthday. Hey, let's, they say, wait to humiliate. You can't insult a dead person on his birthday, because he can't even defend himself. So I came to see what kind of books they were, whether I had time to buy one of the forbidden ones. And I found it! Super scrambled eggs. That being said, I'm vegan, which is funny. I am against eating eggs. Even so, I would not prohibit this book, ”said bookstore visitor Greg Zier.

Not only vegans do not understand, but also the same young parents of different skin colors, different views and beliefs. Just in case, in the early morning, thousands rushed to bookstores in order to have time to snatch the “forbidden” at least from under the counter.
“These are all consequences of the ridiculous censorship. My wife told me this morning that already five of Dr. Seuss's books have been banned. And we immediately came to buy at least one. Amazon was already selling for $ 900 in the morning. This means that they are no longer in stock. That is why we are here, ”said Milo Avidan, a bookstore visitor.
“I have two children, they love these books, and I am bitter that I will not be able to read them today. We cannot erase the past. We can help our children interpret the information they read. And they will pay attention to some details that are very important and good, ”said Vivian Venneri, a journalist from Italy.
However, censors are not up to the details. They are only at the beginning of the journey. There are six books outside the law, but the author has written 10 times more of them in his entire life. There is work to do. The struggle against the writer's creativity two years ago was started by the now progressive American movement in the USA “Kensle Culcha” (“Let's Abolish Culture”). At the request of the activists, they even conducted a scientific study. It is now believed that out of the fifty Dr. Seuss books studied, 43 are extremely harmful to ordinary Americans. All of them were written in the period from the 30s to the 70s of the last century.
Theodore Zois Geisel is the real name of Dr. Seuss. He was born into a family of German emigrants in 1904. He was known as a brilliant cartoonist, then a writer, animator. There are many film adaptations based on his tales from Hollywood. In 1984 he won the Pulitzer Prize. He died in 1991. Seven years later, in his honor, the National Education Association declared the birthday of the classic – March 2 – “Reading Day across America” – an annual children's holiday.
