The US military uses simulators of potential adversaries in exercises to visually get used to them. Recently, a mock-up of China's Type 99 main battle tank was spotted on American roads.
According to Voennoye Obozreniye, the vehicle was heading for a US Army base. The ZTZ-99 Phase I was recognized by the type of reactive armor on the turret, the square laser jammer on the left, and the tall domed laser equipment on the right.
Interestingly, in reality, only a few dozen Phase I models were produced. This modification of the tank was not mass-produced. Experts noted that the Americans should have made a mock-up of the Type 96A, the most common Chinese main battle tank.
In the past, the United States has used Russian mock-ups for training exercises. For example, in 2019, the US National Guard entered into an agreement with a Hollywood special effects company to make up Hummers for wheeled T-72s.
