With the 53-year-old Amazon Cloud boss, a long-time companion of Jeff Bezos takes over the fortunes of the world's largest online retailer.
Change in leadership at Internet giant Amazon: Group founder Jeff Bezos announced on Tuesday that, after almost three decades, he would hand over management of the company to the previous cloud computing boss Andy Jassy. Bezos will continue to play an important role at Amazon as chairman of the board of directors.
The 53-year-old Jassy has been traded as a possible successor to Bezos for some time. Until last September, the head of customer service and Bezo's right-hand man, Jeff Wilke, had been seen as a potential successor. But then he surprisingly announced that he was leaving the company at the beginning of this year. And so Jassy remained the first – and probably only – option for the responsible task.
Harvard graduate Jassy has spent virtually his entire career at Amazon. In 1997 he started as a marketing manager and, according to the “Handelsblatt”, quickly moved into the inner circle of Bezos management. In 2006 Andy Jassy took over Amazon Web Services (AWS). AWS has been responsible for a large part of Amazon's bottom line for years. In 2020, AWS made around $ 13.5 billion in profits under Jassy.
