Despite the exceptional Corona situation, Christmas Eve could still be celebrated with the family for many – and with it the giving of presents.
Also in this year marked by corona and lockdowns, Christmas could be celebrated with the closest people taking some measures. Christmas Eve also brought gifts in 2020. Most often, money was given. Around 927 million euros landed under the Christmas tree in cash this year. In comparison, it was around 836 million euros last year. On average, 274 euros were given away per person.
Cash was once again the most common Christmas present this year. This was followed by vouchers, books, films and games. According to a survey by the price comparison portal durchblicker.at, in which 1,199 people were asked, every second person would like to save more on the money gift this year.
The survey also showed that there were clear differences in the amount of money given depending on the federal state: Lower Austria and Vienna had the thickest envelopes under the Christmas tree at 406 and 297 euros, respectively. The thinnest envelopes with cash content were in Tyrol (185 euros) and Carinthia (199 euros).
On average, around seven out of ten euros would be spent right away, and a third would be saved. In the case of Salzburgers, it is almost half (46 percent) that is put aside. In contrast, the Burgenlanders spend almost 80 percent of their money gifts.
