Kylian Mbappe missed the decisive penalty in the last sixteen at the EURO. Then, at the age of 22, he even offered France his resignation.
Young star Kylian Mbappe spoke up this week with honest statements. The Paris star commented on his intended transfer last summer. He admitted publicly for the first time that he had submitted a transfer request to the club's top management in July. Real Madrid offered up to € 200 million. PSG turned it down despite the Frenchman's contract expiring.
The conversation with “L'Equipe” wasn't just about the future at club level. Mbappe also spoke about his role in the national team and made people sit up and take notice.
At just 22 years of age, the exceptional talent is already about to make his 50th international match. But he now reveals that the world champion (2018) has considered leaving it at a young age. Mbappe: “I never wanted to be a problem, but I felt like I was becoming a problem and people saw me as a problem.
Also: “The most important thing is the French team, and if the French team is happier without me, then that's the way it is.”
Why did it come to this? Mbappe had missed the decisive penalty in the European Championship finals in the round of 16 against Switzerland. France was eliminated, the PSG attacker mutated into the target of angry fans.
He recalls, “The message I got was that we lost because of my ego and that I wanted to take up too much space.” He also no longer felt supported by the association boss Noel Le Graet.
Despite being whistled at in every stadium in France, the striker said: “It's over now. I have so much love for the French team that I can ignore it all.”
