Thailand will become the first country in Southeast Asia to legalize same-sex marriage and after the kingdom's Senate approved the equality bill marriages.

The Senate voted overwhelmingly to pass the bill after its final reading. A total of 130 senators voted in favor. Only four members opposed the bill.
At the same time, the bill still requires royal approval before marital equality can become a reality in Thailand, but the process is considered a formality. The law will take effect 120 days after it is published in the Royal Gazette.
The vote means Thailand will become only the third place in Asia to allow marriage equality, after Taiwan legalized same-sex marriage in 2019 and Nepal in 2023.

The bill gives LGBTQ+ couples the same legal rights and recognition as heterosexual couples, including rights to inheritance, adoption, and healthcare decisions.
