The Institute of Experimental Medicine expects to complete preclinical trials of the world's first edible vaccine against coronavirus by the end of 2021, said the head of the Department of Molecular Microbiology, Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences Alexander Suvorov, RIA Novosti reports.

As Suvorov noted, after the end of the research work, the preparation of the dossier will begin. It is added that the taste of the vaccine will be similar to fermented milk products.

In April, the director of the IEM, Professor of the Russian Academy of Sciences Alexander Dmitriev said that research on the new drug had started as an initiative project.

Later, the Russian government approved the creation of a world-class scientific center, which also included the St. Petersburg Institute. Since then, the project to create the world's first edible vaccine against coronavirus has become one of the main areas of research.

Earlier, the director of the Gamaleya Center, Alexander Gintsburg, said that the Sputnik V vaccine would be administered twice to adolescents 12-17 years old, as well as to the adult population, but the concentration of the drug would be reduced.
