A few hours after the incident, the streets of Dublin began to be full of dissatisfied people. The crowd chanted anti-immigrant slogans and clashed with police.

The protesters did not stop there. They set police cars and buses on fire and looted shops.

City police detained 34 people for participating in the riots.

Law enforcement officers almost immediately detained the attacker with a knife. Authorities have not yet released the suspect's personal information, but anti-immigrant activists have said he is a foreigner.

The protesters themselves gathered near the city where the incident occurred.

Police Commissioner Drew Harris said people were being radicalized through social media and the internet. As a result, eleven police cars were damaged, and vehicles were set on fire, including three buses and a tram. The rioters robbed 13 stores.

Chief Superintendent Patrick McMenamin described Thursday's riots as “wanton banditry”.

Police spokesman Liam Geraghty said during a press conference that although the investigation was still at an early stage, police were confident the attack was not an act of terrorism.

Siobhan Kearney, who happened to be nearby and witnessed the incident, said that together with another passer-by, they disarmed the man with a knife.

“Without thinking, I just ran across the road to help,” she said.

The man subsequently found himself on the ground, and other people joined in his arrest.

“Together with an American woman, we organized a circle around him and said that we would wait for the police,” said the witness.
